Obituary
of Rev. E.F. Herman Miessler.
It has pleased the Lord to receive into His rest His faithful servant E.F. Herman Miessler.
Rev. Miessler was born June 6, 1861, at Mount Pleasant, Michigan. His parents were E.G.H. Miessler and Carolina, nee Huning. His father, at the time, was missionary among the Chippewa Indians. However, because the Indians removed to other sections, as well as for other reasons, the missionary quit the work in this field and went to Saginaw, Michigan, where he taught school. Our deceased brother attended that school. In 1871 the family removed to Chicago. Here Miessler attended the parochial school of Rev. A. Wagner until in 1874 he entered Concordia College at Fort Wayne. Having finished his studies there in 1880, he took up the theological course at the St. Louis seminary, graduating with honors in 1883. He received and accepted a call to Columbus, Nebraska, then in its primitive stages. He organized Immanuel Congregation with six families. The Lord so blessed the labors of our brother that today the church is one of the largest in the northern part of the State. For nearly forty-five years he served this church and, in addition, organized a church at Platte Center, which he served for twenty-two years. Another congregation, a small one, a fruit of his labor, is located on the Island; this congregation remained under his care up to his death. As visitor and secretary of the Board of Control of the Teachers’ College at Seward the services of Brother Miessler extended into wider circles.
In 1884 Pastor Miessler was united in marriage to Miss Clara Wurmb, of St. Louis, Missouri. God blessed this union with six children, three sons and three daughters, all of whom and also the widow survive him.
About a year before his death our brother was taken ill. He suffered great pain, and gradually he was incapacitated for work. A journey to Colorado brought no relief. After submitting to an operation he lingered on patiently, subjecting himself wholly to the good will of his Lord. Monday, April 16, at 2 P.M., the Lord called His faithful servant home at the age of 66 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
The funeral services took place April 19. A large number of pastors and members of the surrounding churches took part in the ceremonies. After a short service at the parsonage the body was borne to the church. Active pall-bearers were the brethren of the Columbus Conference, who were preceeded by twenty-four honorary pall-bearers appointed by the congregation of the deceased. At the express wish of our Brother, President W. Harms, of Bancroft, Nebraska, spoke on Phil. 1, 21. 23 in German and Rev. A. Bergt, of Schuyler, Nebraska, on Heb. 13, 7 in the English language. Dir. C.F. Brommer, of Seward, as representative of the college, Rev. H. Fisher, for the congregation at Platte Center, who also read a number of messages and letters of condolence, and Rev. Holstein, of Plainview, Nebraska, delivered addresses. The church choir and the schoolchildren rendered suitable hymns. An octet of Seward students sang twice.
The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of Columbus, the
undersigned officiating.
