Obituary of Prof. Charles Scaer.

Prof. Charles Scaer, for thirty-three years head of the English Department of St. John’s College, Winfield, Kansas, died suddenly of heart failure on June 9 while attending the West Kansas Pastoral Conference near Canton, Kansas.  He died at the age of 70 years, 7months, and 29 days.  On the day of his death he was apparently in good health and took an active part in all discussions on the conference floor.

Looking forward to the future with a hopeful and prayerful attitude, Professor Scaer had just finished encouraging the pastors of the conference to continue zealously in the missionary expansion work of the Lutheran Church, when a few minutes later he was seen suddenly to relax and sink back in his seat. In the midst of active service and without a sound orcein of pain he passed from this life and entered the realms of heavenly joy promised by the savior.

Charles Scaer was born October 11, 1857, at Conway, Ohio. His elementary education was received in the schools of his home community. He attended Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio; also Hiram College and the Tri-State Normal College at Angola, Indiana, from which school he received his A.B. and A.M. degrees.  For seven years after his graduation he was professor of Latin at the Tri-State Normal College.

In 1889 he married Hannah Mohrlock, of Hillsdale, Michigan.  In 1894 he accepted a call to St. John’s College as head of the English department. After a period of thirty-three years of service the veteran teacher resigned in June, 1927, because of failing health.  His active interest in the work of the Church continues, however, and he undertook to translate into English some of the writings of Dr. Walther and Dr. Stoeckhardt.  Shortly before his resignation in 1927 he published A Treatise on Conscience, a book in which he presented the results of many years’ psychological study and observation.

In his work at St. John’s College he was always a kind and fatherly counselor to the hundreds of students with whom he came in contact during his long period of service. After private study in theology he was admitted to the ministry of the Lutheran Church by examination in 1900.  For many years he served the Lutheran mission charges at Augusta and Ashton, Kansas, and during a long vacancy in the pastorate he also served the congregation in Winfield.

He was treasurer of St. John's College for more than thirty years and was active in all the building projects of the school.  He was chairman of the board of the Lutheran Children's Home in Winfield for many years. He was deeply interested in the work of the Children's Friend Society and was always ready to make sacrifices when occasions demanded.  (Because of his devoted interest in the work of his organization many memorial gifts were made to the Lutheran Children’s Home instead of the usual floral offerings.)   As a citizen of Winfield he was highly respected and honored because of his active interest in civic affairs.  As chairman of the city library board he was an influential leader in the educational circles of the city.

The body of Prof. Charles Scaer was laid to rest in Highland Cemetery on June 14.  After a short service at the home the body was taken to the college in which the deceased had spent the greater portion of his active life.  Many pastors, former students, and friends came from distant parts of the State and thus gave evidence of their high respect and sincere friendship for the veteran pioneer teacher. Alumni and former students of the esteemed teacher formed a guard of honor and directed those paying tribute to his memory while the body lay in state in the administration building of St. John's College.  A brief service was conducted at the college by Director A.M. Rehwinkel.  In the church Rev. F. Worthmann preached an impressive sermon using for his text Daniel 12, 3. 13.  Rev. E.J. Dierker spoke on behalf of the Board of Trustees and of the Kansas District.  Rev. L.H. Deffner represented the West Kansas Pastoral Conference as a special delegate, and Prof. H. Stoeppelwerth spoke in behalf of the faculty.  Messages of condolence were read by Director Rehwinkel.

Prof. Scaer leaves to mourn his loss his wife, three sons, all of whom are actively engaged in the work of the church, and four daughters.  Three children preceded him to the life beyond the grave.  May the Lord comfort the bereaved with the certain hope that they shall all be reunited in eternal happiness!  Winfield, Kansas;  G.A. Kuhlmann.

Obituary of Dr. C.M. Zorn.

Notice has already been taken in the Lutheran Witness of the death of this highly esteemed churchman.  The last time that Dr. Zorn attended services at the church to which he belonged was on Easter Day.  Previous to that time he had been quite regular in his attendance.  He would complain that he did not feel well enough in the morning hours to attend services, but later in the day he began to feel better.  He was always able to be up and about during the day.  For his age he was certainly in excellent health.  He was even happy to receive visitors.  His mind was active, and he was very entertaining and friendly.  In the evening of June 29 he unexpectedly had a stroke.  He had to be carried up to his bed, from which he did not arise again.  I saw him two days later.  He was able to understand the Scripture-passages that I read to him, but he was unable to express himself clearly, although a person could at times make out what he was saying.  He was quite restless, and from that time forth he began to fail more and more.  He lingered on until July 11 and listened to everything a person told him and read to him.  When asked whether he understood, he always replied in the affirmative.  On Wednesday, July 11, however, he lay in a semiconscious state and did not respond to anything that was said to him.  The following day, Thursday, July 12, at 12.15 A.M., he quietly passed away without regaining consciousness.  During his sickness, his six children were with him.  His distant daughter, wife of Rev. A. Rimbach, of Portland, Oregon, had been notified of her father’s condition and had arrived in good season.  Prof. Otto Zorn, from Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, was also there.  Rev. Hans Zorn, of Indianapolis, likewise had come.  Carl, Walter, and another daughter, the wife of Mr. J.O. Schake, all of whom live in Cleveland, were always with him.  His children and daughters-in-law prayed with him and sang hymns with him.  Dr. Zorn himself frequently joined in the singing.

The funeral services were held on Saturday, July 14 at 1.45 P.M., in the home of his son Carl in East Cleveland, where he had lived for the past sixteen years, and 2.30 in the church.  Rev. Armin Schroeder, assistant pastor of Zion Church, Cleveland, officiated at the house.  Burial took place from St. John's Church in South Euclid, where his son Hans had been pastor for many years.  Every available seat in the church was occupied at the funeral service.  Rev. Armin Schroeder preached a short German sermon, basing his remarks on 1 Cor. 15, 10.  Rev. Paul Kleinhans then delivered a brief English message in behalf of the Central District President.  Elmer I. Miller, pastor of Gethsemane Church in Cleveland Heights, of which Dr. Zorn was a member, then delivered the English sermon, basing his remarks on Rom. 7, 24. 25a.  This text was taken in accordance with a request of Dr. Zorn himself which he made on December 19, 1926, when he believed that the time of his departure was near at hand.  Rev. W.O. Bischoff, pastor of St. John’s Congregation, South Euclid, officiated at the cemetery.

Thus the mortal remains of a great servant of the Lord have been laid to rest.  Pastors P. Kleinhans, F. Pieper, M. Ilse, Sr., W. Single, T. Schurdel, and J.H. Meyer were pallbearers.  Pastor C.P. Schulz attended the funeral as a representative of the congregation in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, which Dr. Zorn had served before he came to Cleveland.  Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Elmer I. Miller.
