Obituary of Rev. Timothy A. Dautenhahn.

Rev. Timothy A. Dautenhahn, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, eight miles northeast of Mattoon, Illinois, was fatally injured on August 16, 1928, and all the members of his family were more or less seriously injured when his automobile collided on State Route No. 25, about two miles from his home, with another automobile.  Rev. Dautenhahn was fully conscious after the accident and realized immediately how seriously he was injured and that his moments on earth were few.  After bidding farewell to his beloved wife and six children, he commended his soul into the hands of his heavenly Father.  About an hour after the accident, engaged in fervent prayer, his soul was received into the rest eternal.

Rev. Timothy Dautenhahn was born near Antonia, Missouri, June 4, 1889, the son of Rev. C.A. Dautenhahn, who was pastor at that place.  He attended Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois, to prepare himself for the holy ministry.  After diligently pursuing the six-year course and after teaching and preaching one year in the Lutheran congregation in Augsburg, Illinois, he was ordained in 1913.  He followed a call to Fairland, Oklahoma, where he labored six years with signal success, seeing his mission growing into a self-supporting congregation.  In the summer of 1919 he followed a call to Dieterich, Illinois, where he served two charges for four years.  In July, 1923, he was called to St. Paul’s Congregation, eight miles northeast of Mattoon.  This congregation he served faithfully until his premature departure.  He attained an age of 39 years, 2 months, and 12 days.

On Sunday, August 19, the day on which the congregation had planned to celebrate its annual mission-festival and which was also the fifteenth anniversary of their pastor, the grief-stricken congregation, bowing under the mighty hand of God, was in deep mourning.  Rev. Chr. Braeunig, of Buckley, Illinois, preached the German sermon on Ps. 139, 1-5.  The English sermon, based on Matt. 25, 21, was delivered by Rev. J. Rozak, of Chicago.  The undersigned very briefly addressed in particular the members of St. Paul’s Congregation.  Many brethren of the Central Illinois District were present and expressed their sympathy and offered words of consolation.

After the funeral services at home the remains were sent to St. Trinity Cemetery at St. Louis, Missouri, where interment took place.  At the grave in St. Louis the Revs. E. Lange, E. Duever, and C. Soderstrom officiated.

The deceased was a gifted preacher.  He leaves his sorrowing wife Johanna, nee Gieschen, with whom, in 1914, he entered into the estate of holy wedlock, and six children, the oldest of whom is thirteen.  God is a Father of the widows and orphans.  May He richly comfort this bereaved family according to His grace and loving-kindness!  Mattoon, Illinois; M.F. Oberndorfer.

Obituary of Teacher S. John Richter.

Another faithful laborer in the Lord’s vineyard was called to his reward when Teacher S. John Richter, on February 22 of this year, departed this life.  Mr. Richter was born November 5, 1850, at Mengelsdorf, Silesia, Germany, and at a tender age was taken by his parents to America, in the company of a shipload of emigrants who, under the leadership of Pastor Kilian, sought greater freedom of conscience in America than they enjoyed at home.  They arrived at Galveston in 1854, moving onward to Houston, Texas, where, soon after, the father of Mr. Richter died of yellow fever.  Pastor Braun, who was then in charge of the congregation, entrusted five other orphans, who had also lost their parents in the plague, to the care of the mother of the boy with the request that she take them to an orphan asylum at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He accompanied the little family as far as New Orleans, while she traveled onward with her wards up the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers to Pittsburgh.  After confirmation Pastor Berkemeier persuaded young John to enter the Teachers’ Seminary at Addison, Illinois.   Mr. Richter has seen long years of active service, notably at Watertown, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Chicago, Houston, Calgary, Alberta, and as a supply professor at Seward, Nebraska.

During his declining hears he made his home with his daughter at Chicago, but continued to be active in the Sunday-school of Redeemer Church (the Rev. G. Schuessler, pastor) for many years.

On September 9, 1877, he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Ida Nimmer.  The union was blessed with four children, one of whom died in infancy.  One of his sons entered the ministry.

His pastor, the Rev. Schuessler, spoke on 1 Tim. 1, 15. 16 at the funeral.  Mr. Richter is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.  He was one of the guests of honor at our Teachers’ Seminary at River Forest, Illinois, in 1923, when a goodly assembly of teachers having served fifty and more years were awarded honorary diplomas by the faculty.

May his memory be kept alive in our midst!  Victor W. Richter.
