Obituary of Rev. Carl Manthey Zorn, D.D.

On July 12 the death of Dr. C.M. Zorn was reported from Cleveland, Ohio.  Death came from a complication of troubles due to old age.

In the passing of Dr. Zorn the Lutheran Church mourns one who has had a significant share in her upbuilding, as a missionary, a preacher, and a writer.  In more than one way Dr. Zorn stands in a class by himself.  We have never had another man like him.  Childlike faith and penetrating intellect, kindness of spirit and a stout heart, were combined in him as in few, if any, men of our acquaintance.  He was for many years the most widely read author in the Lutheran Church of America.  He retained his vigor to the closing months of his life.

Rev. Dr. Zorn was a man of great natural gifts, enhanced by industry and intense application to every task which he undertook.  A man of deep learning and widest intellectual culture, he never lost interest in every-day affairs and was a close observer of character and a student of human nature.  His interest in our Church and its work was intense.  Of his many books none are dull.  Particularly in recent years Dr. Zorn wrote a series of exegetical works, which roused more attention than such works usually do.  In addition he wrote much for our periodicals.  Dr. Zorn was an outstanding preacher, with fascinating delivery and style, as conversationalist, whether on theological or secular topics, one of the rarest men we have ever met.  Since his retirement in 1911 he lived with his son Carl on beautiful Hanover Drive, and another son, Walter, lived close by.

Dr. Zorn was a native of Schleswig, having been born at Sterup, in that country, on March 18, 1846.  The name Manthey is that of his mother’s family.  Fine old portraits of his parents adorned a wall of Dr. Zorn’s apartment at East Cleveland; two people of noble features and evident refinement, of whom Dr. Zorn loved to tell his recollections.  His childhood years and youth are described in his fascinating volumes Grossvaters Jugenderinnerungen.  He attended college at Kreuznach and Erlangen and the universities of Kiel, Erlangen, and Leipzig, graduating in 1870.  He was ordained by the theological faculty of Erlangen, February 19, 1871, and a few months later was installed as missionary for the Tamils in East India.  The story of his inner and outer conflicts while in the service of the German Missionary Society, which sent him out, are told in his autobiographical work.  He came to the United States in 1876, his first charge being Trinity Congregation of Sheboygan (1876).  From 1881 until 1911 he was pastor of Zion, Cleveland, Ohio.

Rev. Zorn married Miss Marie Hengstenberg at Madras, East India, December 26, 1872.  Of his nine children six are still living.  His son Hans is pastor at Indianapolis.

The title of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, was conferred upon Rev. Zorn by the Faculty of Concordia Seminary, October 25, 1920.  G.
