Obituary of Rev. H.F.W. Brandes.

Apparently in good health and spirits, Rev. H.F.W. Brandes unexpectedly, after a brief illness, departed this life on August 4, 1928.

Born in Braunschweig, Germany, May 13, 1862, the deceased, at the age of six years, emigrated to America with his parents, who settled down at Kingston, New York.  Here he attended the Christian day-school and was confirmed by the sainted Pastor Stutz.  After his confirmation, encouraged by his pastor, he entered Concordia College at Fort Wayne to prepare himself for the holy ministry and graduated from the theological seminary at St. Louis in 1884.

Called as a missionary in the State of Iowa, he served nine mission-stations.  Later he served congregations at What Cheer and Mackey, Iowa.  In 1900 he was called to Huntington, Indiana, which congregation he served for ten years.  In 1910 he accepted the call to St. Mark’s Congregation at Cleveland, Ohio.  Here his untiring and faithful labor and wise leadership was signally blessed.  From a small congregation, St. Mark’s grew to one of the largest of our city.

Sunday. August 5, a brief service was conducted by Rev. G. Eyler for the bereaved family in the parsonage, and the mortal remains were conveyed to the church and placed under the pulpit, from which he intended to preach on that Sunday.  Funeral services were held the following day.  The spacious church was filled to overflowing with mourners and friends.  The undersigned delivered the German sermon, based on Hos. 6, 1.  Rev. E. Weber spoke in English, basing his remarks on 1 Tim. 4, 7. 8.  Rev. G. Eyler officiated at the grave.  The mortal remains of the deceased brother now await the summons of the great Resurrection Day at beautiful Lutheran Cemetery.

Rev. Brandes was joined in holy wedlock, to Mary, nee Sadloff, in 1885.  This union was blessed with four sons and three daughters, who, together with the bereaved widow and two brothers, mourn his unexpected demise.

Jesus says: “Our friend sleepeth, but I go that I may awaken him out of sleep.”  F.J. Keller.

Obituary of Rev. Otto Matthies.

Twice within the short period of less than two weeks the angel of death entered the Lutheran parsonage at Avon, South Dakota.  Having returned with his family from the funeral of his fifteen-year-old son, Rev. Otto Matthies complained of feeling ill.  His condition gradually grew worse.  Pneumonia set in.  In spite of the best medical aid obtainable he succumbed to the same malady that had taken his son after a brief illness only eleven days before.  With a prayer on his lips in firm faith in his Savior he entered into eternal rest on May 24.

Funeral services were conducted on May 26 at Avon.  Rev. Chr. Wieting offered words of comfort in a German sermon, while Rev. G.H. Steffen delivered the English address.  Burial took place at the Lutheran cemetery near Hartford, South Dakota, Rev. A.C. Oberheu officiating.

The deceased was born December 18, 1883, near Hartford, South Dakota.  He attended our institutions at Milwaukee and St. Louis, graduating from the latter in 1909.  He faithfully served the congregations at Spencer, Nebraska, from 1909 to 1912, at Hampton, Nebraska, from 1912 to 1915, at Brazilton, Kansas, from 1915 to 1927, and he had just rounded out a year of successful service at Avon, South Dakota, when the Lord called him hence.

On July 8, 1909, the deceased entered the state of holy wedlock with Emma, nee Wendorf, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The Lord blessed this union with one son and two daughters.  Our departed brother is survived by his widow, a daughter, six brothers, and two sisters.  Sioux Falls, South Dakota; G.A. Troemel.

Obituary of Rev. Henry J.H. Rathjen.

Rev. Henry J.H. Rathjen, son of Pastor H. Rathjen, was born at Palatine, Illinois, June 25, 1872.  A few months later his parents removed to Theresa, Wisconsin, where he attended the Parochial school and after his confirmation entered our college at Milwaukee.  In 1889 he entered our Seminary at Springfield from which he was graduated in 1894.  His first charge was the congregation at Congerville, Illinois.  Later he served the following congregations:  Otter Creek, Wisconsin, from 1897 to 1900; Theresa, Wisconsin, from 1900 to 1915; Wautoma, Wisconsin, from 1915 to 1924.  Since June, 1924, he had served the congregations at Arlington and Poynette, Wisconsin.

In 1894 he entered the estate of holy matrimony with Anna, nee Linse, which union was blessed with five sons and seven daughters, all of whom survive their father.

On August 18 he was stricken with stomach hemorrhages and, following repeated blood transfusions, submitted to an operation on September 6, when pneumonia developed, resulting in his death two days later.

Funeral services were conducted on September 12 in the church at Poynette, where Pastor Wm. Uffenbeck spoke on Job 19, 25 in the German language, following which another service was conducted at Arlington, where Dir. G. Chr. Barth spoke on Phil. 1, 23.  Both texts had been chosen by the deceased.  Interment followed in the North Leeds cemetery, where Pastor F. Nammacher officiated.

“Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when He cometh, shall find watching.”  Luke 12, 37.        Madison, Wisconsin; F.C. Brandhorst.

Obituary of Teacher J.A. Theiss.

Teacher J.A. Theiss was born August 26, 1859, in Zelienople, Pennsylvania.  His father was pastor of an Ohio Synod congregation at that place.  When the lad was about six years old, his father accepted a call to Middleton, Ohio.  There the lad attended the Christian day-school and was also confirmed.  In 1875 he entered our Teachers’ Seminary at Addison, Illinois, where he graduated in 1879.  He was called to Danville, Illinois, July 6, 1882, he was married to Miss Katherine Bahls.  God blessed the union with nine children, five of whom have preceded the father into eternity.  In 1891 he accepted a call to the school of St. Peter’s Congregation in Chicago.  In 1898 Bethlehem Church extended a call to him as principal, which he accepted.  For thirty years he served this congregation faithfully as teacher, organist, choir director, and secretary.  He was also one of the organizers of the Milwaukee Mission in 1901 and served this organization as secretary and member of the Executive Board since 1914.  As a member of the Electoral College of the Teachers’ Seminary at River Forest and as a member of many important committees he rendered our Synod distinguished services.  Through his Zwischenspiele fuer Organisten (interludes for organists), published in 1903, through his Select Songs, which appeared in 1920, and through a collection of Christmas hymns he became widely known throughout our Synod and far beyond its bounds, in Australis, Europe, and Asia.  By his death, Bethlehem Church in particular and our Synod in general has lost a God-fearing, gifted, and faithful laborer.

Thursday, September 6, at noon, on his way to school, carrying books for his class, he died suddenly from a stroke.  Funeral services were held September 10.  The undersigned preached in German on Is. 45, 15, and the assistant pastor, Rev. Clarence Kaiser, in English on John 12, 26.  The Milwaukee teachers’ choir sang “Whatever God Ordains Is Good.”  Concordia Teachers’ College at River Forest sent a representative.

The departed, who had just begun his fiftieth year in office, died at the age of 69 years and 11 days.  The survivors mourning his death are his wife, three daughters, four grandchildren, his aged mother-in-law, three brothers, three sisters, and other relatives.

“They that turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars forever and ever.”  Dan. 12, 3.            Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Oscar Kaiser.
