The Ladies Auxiliary Cook Book, O.R.T. Eleanor Ellison No. 36, Los Angeles, 1934, CAL-8.
Occasionally I like to do a little research on an indexed
book to see what the organization represents, especially one containing an unknown
acronym. In this case, one possibility is a present-day organization called ORT
America. The following is from its website: In 1880 a group of Russian Jews
petitioned Czar Alexander II for permission to start a fund to assist Jewish
trade schools and establish new colonies, agricultural schools and model farms
to help lift Russia’s five million Jews out of crushing poverty. A “Society for
Trades and Agricultural Labor” was created. The ORT acronym is derived from the
original name Obschestvo Remeslenovo i. Zemledelcheskovo Trouda. Another
possibility is that the group’s name has meaning only for its members. If
anyone has other information regarding the O.R.T. Eleanor Ellison No. 36
Auxiliary please share that with me, penny.kailer@gmail.com.
I will be happy to send copies of recipes.
